Aztec quartz rabbit pendant

Quartz rabbit pendant, Mexica/Aztec, c. 1300-1521 CE, approx. 1.5” long, British Museum.

Among Mesoamerican peoples the rabbit (Sylvilagus) features widely as a symbol of the moon. The Aztecs also associated the rabbit with their patron hunting god Mixcóatl, perhaps alluding to their Chichimec forebears who were hunter-gatherers. The rabbit’s link with the intoxicating drink pulque seems to have its origin on the Gulf Coast and was later incorporated into Aztec religion.
