These past few years I have been looking for more info on my roots. On my mum’s side, my grandma still has the family’s metate. Even though my grandma got it from her mother in law bc of marriage. It is tradition that the youngest (which would be my grandfather) would get the metate. I always wondered how old my family’s metate is: I’m assuming it’s from the 1800’s. You will see it has a rim around it which gets to my conclusions. Most metates which were before the conquest do not have that. A long story on why it is in bad condition & put together with cement. When my uncle was small, he was upset so much (no one remembers why) that he knocked the metate down from the table which got it to break into two. My grandma cemented it together.
