A Time to Remember: The Aztecs (Text Book and Teacher Resource File)

Tony D Triggs, Folens Ltd 1995

Bright, well illustrated, attractively presented text book, full of straight forward, solid information which is well sequenced (the story of the arrival of the Spanish is interwoven with depictions of Aztec life and culture)

Both text book and (photocopiable) resource file are full of step-by-step activities for children, many of them unusual, imaginative and based on good use of primary and secondary sources

A couple of small omissions: the ubiquitous ‘prickly bush’ referred to on p14 of the text book has to be the century plant cactus (maguey), not the one illustrated; inexplicably the text fails to link (p36) the 4 flyers (in the Volador ceremony) and the 13 descending circles to the 52-year pre-Columbian century (13x4=52); and, in my opinion, one major omission: instead of a necessary section on the legacy of the Aztecs today, the book ends (p47) with a very banal and lame sentence - ‘Nowadays, archaeologists dig up things that tell us more about the Aztecs and Spaniards’!
