Moctezuma’s Zoo

Moctezuma’s Zoo

Jackie Herman-O’Neal, PublishAmerica 2013

A delightful, engaging story about an Aztec girl who gathers birds and animals for Moctezuma’s zoo in Tenochtitlan.

Suitable for young readers

Lovely, naive, simple, colourful drawings

Supported by excellent, creative suggestions for classroom activities based on the story (at back of book), and a glossary

We can’t help wondering why the author chose to include gazelles and camels?! Though she doesn’t claim these are native American creatures, why not choose two that are? An armadillo and a turtle would have seemed to us so much more appropriate

Excellent and appealing to young children. Recommended
