Elizabeth Baquedano, Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Guides, London 1993

Beautifully produced, profusely illustrated, highly informative, well written and balanced source book; aimed at older children, it lacks any ‘activity’ suggestions and has nothing on the Aztec legacy today in Mexico, but provides an excellent, wide-ranging introduction to Aztec civilization.

Its only major drawback (and many teachers have commented on this) is that it covers the Aztecs, the Maya and the Incas in one book, mixing in examples from all three civilizations on most pages. This can of course lead to confusion, and pupils must be given appropriate advice if using the book on their own for research. Future editions, it seems, will still stick to this formula, which is a real shame.
