Aztec art displays at Oak Farm Junior

Oak Farm Junior School, Hillingdon

Oak Farm Junior School in Hillingdon always give us a warm welcome, LOADS of vital help to carry all the materials up to the first floor hall, AND some lovely surprises with the ideas and creativity they come up with every year vis-a-vis their Aztec displays...

Work based on ‘The Shawl’

We’ve already mentioned them on our ‘Ideas for Project Work’ page; here’s another ‘first’ they’ve shown us - artwork based on the story by Yvonne Winer called ‘The Shawl’. The author’s description of the book reads: ‘The Shawl is the story of Juanita, a street child who spent her days earning a few pesos running messages for merchants in the market. Then one day Juanita met Doña Rosa, whose wondrous shawl hid secrets of the ancient aztecs in its woven patterns. Juanita, however, soon found that ancient secrets can lead to great adventures but grave dangers.’

We’ve now (2014) been to Oak Farm Junior 17 times. Reminiscing with Yr. 5 leader Laura Mitchell, one of these visits (July 2000) was actually paid for by the British Museum Education Service - it was Laura’s first time out as a teacher on a school trip, and the BM told them on arrival that the Mexico Gallery was closed! So to make up for it they funded a visit from Mexicolore to the school. That year a young pupil, Katie Harker, was in the Mexicolore workshop in Yr 5 - she’s now a teacher at the school, and sat in on this year’s Aztecs workshop! (See pic, right).
