Aztec parents were so strict because they believed it was imperative [vital] to raise children to be energetic and morally responsible and morally upright adults who would maintain not only their own personal balance and hence well-being and longevity [how long they would live] but also maintain the balance and hence well-being and longevity of their families, neighbors, fellow altepetl [community] citizens, and the cosmos and all its non-human inhabitants.
